The weekly devotional is based on scripture showing how light and darkness exist together. The short reflections explore the theme of light and darkness in Advent scriptures. How we understand these ideas affect the way we view God, our faith, and our world. Inspired by Barbara Brown Taylor's book, Learning to Walk in the Dark, we re-frame traditional understandings of light as good and darkness as bad or evil.
Each of the devotions includes the following:
- Suggested scripture to read
- An all-ages reflection
- Discussion questions suitable for all ages
- A "Going Deeper" section with questions for all ages
- Illustrations to color
- Week One Reflection: John 1:1-5
- Week Two Reflection: Matthew 1:18b-24a, Luke 1:26b-38
- Week Three Reflection: Luke 2:2-14
- Week Four Reflection: Luke 2:15-20
- Week Five Reflection: John 1:1-5
Ways to use our Illustrated Devotional
Churches could purchase it to use for an intergenerational Advent program, or as another Advent resource to send home with people of all ages. We could also see youth ministries and college ministries working through this devotional during Advent.
If your church has different plans for Advent, this is also a perfect resource for individuals to buy and use as their devotional for Advent. Since they are weekly (and not daily) devotions, it makes it more doable for you to work on during Advent.
After completing your purchase, you'll instantly receive a link to download a PDF that you can print by yourself.
We aim to make the price of our products both accessible and fair, and so we ask that you select the appropriate option for your church size.
